Beyond APIs: Building Integrations That Scale
APIs make it possible for systems to communicate. But building a reliable integration takes much more than connecting two endpoints.
In modern software ecosystems, integrations must handle unexpected responses, rate limits, authentication failures, duplicate requests, timeouts, and changes in external systems. What works perfectly with a few requests can behave very differently under production workloads.
I believe good integration engineering comes down to three fundamentals:
- Reliability: Design for failures, not just the happy path.
- Scalability: Understand how the system behaves as traffic and data volumes grow.
- Observability: Make it easy to identify what went wrong, where it happened, and why.
An integration should not simply work. It should remain predictable, maintainable, and resilient as the business grows.
The real challenge isn't connecting systems. It's making sure they continue to work together when things get complicated.
